The "mafia" is a term used to describe organized crime. By organized the thought being that the group is highly organized in their approach to making a profit and protecting their interests. Part of that organization process reportedly includes having high ranking officials within the government and the judicial system as well as wealthy businessmen in many diverse fields involved with or in debt to the organized crime "family". The term "gangster" in the sense you are using it (I think) is refering to a group of street thugs organized together for their own protection and to profit in schemes such as drug trafficing, robbery and other "street crimes". If your question is asking who would win in a one time street battle occuring within a neighborhood in which the "gangsters" were organized. I would say perhaps the gangsters would win as they would probably outnumber the handful of "mafia" that somehow found themselves in this unfortunate situation. Of course this assumes that the "gangsters" are unaware of their victims connections. If you are asking which group would ultimately "win" in a prolonged battle? The answer is "Get outta here" There is NO question that if it were "profitable" to do so, the Mafia could wipe out a gang through organized "hits" and using high ranking officials to prosecute and remove the gang members from the street. What your question fails to acknowledge is the connection between the mafia and the gangsters. If you believe the neighborhood gangsters control the street in terms of the drug trafficing, whom do you think controls the international drug trafficing that supplies them? What keeps our city, state and federal government from simply taking control of the gang infested neighborhood and cleaning it up? Is it possible someone somewhere is being paid off either in money or favors to look the other way? My friend if you buy into the whole mafia conspiracy theory, then surely ;you must know that the question you ask is silly because the mafia has already won.
