To a disciplined mind Happiness is under control. Those who are truly happy don't just know what unhappy people don't but have also understood and acted accordingly. After all everything is controlled by oUr mind then even happiness is controlled by our mind. Then the question arises if we chose to be happy then why do we get unhappy? the truth is we all chose to be happy from the time we are born (through thought) when when something 'bad' happens to us we chosen unhappiness (instinctively). Hence when we chose to be truly happy through thought and instinct it is then that one as attained illumination. This instinct happiness can arise by letting go of desires. well U don't have to leave Ur family and mediate under a tree (unless it's that serious) but U can be more focused on Ur duties and stuff. Break Ur ego (It makes U suffer if U don't). ACCEPT defeat and victory equally but yet concentrate on what U do and when U do that U shall find no difference between them that shall make U unhappy (with this kind of mind set while committing an act U will give Ur best performance as Ur mind is free from the fear of losing). To be happy be free of bondage(desires) when Ur free from all desires ur are illuminated (enlightened).
Hope this helps,

Happiness is an emotion that, like all other emotions, we choose to give it as much space or as little as we want. However, life's circumstances dictate certain emotional responses to certain events - such as, it would be quite strange if you attended a funeral full of happines or a football game full of sorrow. So, unhappy people have either made a choice, or have a genuine mental illness that they have chosen not to acknowledge. The sooner one realizes that all of life is about choices, the sooner we can make the choices of how we will allow our emotions to play a part in our life and accept that there are certain events that will basically follow a set path of emotional repsonses regardless of how we chooose, we may only choose the severity of how they are dealt with.

The teachings of the Buddha are all about how to find happiness in life. You first have to accept that life is suffering. This is so that you do not agonize over the suffering that you experience in life. When you agonize over suffering, you have suffered twice over the same trouble. Happiness comes from within yourself. You can train yourself, and your attitude about life, to look for positive things and avoid things that cause suffering.
Yes, happiness is within our control.
