In one day Cricket, Sunil Gavaskar has been the worst batsman. He scored 36 runs (opening the innings) in one of the World cup matches in full 60 overs.

In Test cricket, I do not recall any batsman who can be tagged as "the worst". Indians are technically good batsman. However those players who are playing in the team as bowlers should not be considered here. If they are considered, BS Chandrashekhar would be the worst batsman. As he used to move towards the square leg umpire as a bowler started his run up to deliver the ball. Presently no one can match him.

In cricket technically all 11 players in a team are batsman. So if a player has been selected either as a batsman or as a bowler , he is a batsman.
By this definition the Spinner Maninder Singh can take the cake
He scored 99 runs in 35 tests averaging 3.8
Coming close are legendary spinner BS ChandraShekhar In 58 tests he scored 167 runs averaging 4.07

In my view Sujit Somsundar was the worst batsmen that Indian cricket has ever seen. Remember the matches against Australia some years before. Being an opening batsman for karnataka he just forgot his basics when sent to open in Indian team.

presently there is no that 'worst' batsman in india. recently all the bowlers have had proved their ability in batting. this was true in past days of indian cricket. i saw some of the answers which has some names of class players. this is not fair. there will be no worst batsman selected for indian cricket team. players selected are best ones. but each will definitely have to undergo some formless era.this is history and it repeats itself.

rohan gavaskar is the worst batsman i have ever seen in my life. i remember, it was australia vs india and the required rate was sailing above 8 an over and this "great" batsman does a forward defence to a full toss ball. i felt like wringing his neck right there.
just because he is the son of the great sunil gavaskar he gets a chance to play, otherwise he's not even fit for gully cricket!

"Dada" Ganguly though he has scored lots of runs but they are all against sunstandard bowling. Once Imran Khan legendary cricketer of Pakistan had said "Ganguly is just good for medium pacers and can not face quality fast bowling and I do agree with great Khan.
