The cartilages are to keep your air passage from collapsing at any one point, which serves primarily to prevent suffocation.
The smooth tissues consist of tiny cilia, which help in trapping pathogens and dust in the air you inhale, thus helping to prevent irritation and infection. Smooth tissues are not within our autonomic control, which means you won't have to control them at all, explaining why breathing is not something we need to learn.
The smooth tissues also contain mucous membranes, which secrete mucus, keeping the respiratory passage moist, and at the same time also helping to fight infection by trapping air-borne particles and pathogens.
