I have heard that provided it's less than a litre of oil it is OK but I'm not too sure. Failing that, I guess the normal thing would be to let it 'soak away' into the ground at the back of the garden.

Not if anyone's watching. Take it to an autoparts store or a friendly garage.

NO! You will be contaminating the aquifer that provides drinking water. Don't put it in the storm drain either. The best thing to do is contact your city's sanitation department. They will help you dispose of the oil and other hazardous materials in a safe way. You will be rewarded with a feeling of goodness for doing the right thing!

A BIG NO NO Firstly its illegal to put anything into a water supply of any kind secondly how would you like it in your drinking water, or on your garden oil does not soak away but stays in the soil for years, don't be lazy you know what to do pour it into a container and take it to your nearest tip.

Take it to your local council owner household refuse site (tip) where it can be disposed of safely and in an environmentally friendly way otherwise you risk damaging soil, wildlife and plant life in your own garden. Definately don't put it into the drain, oil is really bad for clogging up drains

No - in fact that is a criminal offense in the USA.
It will dump into the storm drainage system which is usually the nearest river or creek. That will cause serious pollution problems. It could get into the drinking water supply etc etc.

many oil change places or auto supply stores in the USA will recycle it for you.

Do you like a nice tall glass of 10-40w out of your faucet? I didn't think so. If you pour that down the sewer, that's what you will get. Nothing should go down a sewer drain other than WATER.

Find a recycling center that takes oil.

Tipping it down the drain would be the epitome of irresponsibility.
The local council household refuse depot will normally accept it, if in doubt phone the environment agency or your local council office for advice.

dont get caught doing either...both are illegal...you are supposed th haul it to a disposal site that accepts oil and solvents...some sites charge to dispose ..some if they are subsidised by yhe county wont charge....that being said.its up to you i personally would let it soak away as there is less chance of being spotted than if you dumped it down the sewer.

Take it to the local council tip/recycling centre and they should be able to sort it out for you.

Its really bad for the envionment to put it down the drain or to tip it out in your garden.

No it's not. It will go straight into the drinking water supply.

Motor Oil can be included in your weekly/fortnightly recycling collection.

Or ask your local garage if they will include it in their waste oil.
