It is never NECESSARY. Don't use goggles missing as an excuse not to go swimming. However, Goggles do help you see underwater, and protect your eyes from excess exposure to the water.

It is not necessary for anyone to use goggles.
As a swim coach, I recommend that all my swimmers use goggles. It makes it easisr to see the walls for fast & efficient turns & finishes.
If you are not swimming competitively, then it is up to you to decide if you will use goggles or not.
I prefer to use goggles because the chlorine irritates my eyes.

i started using goggles when i started swimming at 7. sometimes when i forgot my goggles and coach asks me to swim my eyes get really dry afterwards and it even hurts to open them. since that time i've always brought goggles.
if you're not going to be swimming like 5 days a week and you don't have to swim underwater you don't have to wear, though i recommand you wearing one since pool water irritates you eyes and seriously you can swim better with goggles.
