I have a Briggs and Stratton push lawn mower.
The backfire is the only problem.

Lawn Mower Backfire

Those are all wonderfull answers listed above.
However, one thing not mentioned is the possibility that you hit something with the mower blade and partialy sheared the flywheel key between the flywheel and engine crank shaft.

What that will do is change the ignition timing slightly and cause the spark plug to fire before top dead center.

Does it try to yank the cord out of your hand when you start it?

Other things that would have narowed down the answers you got, would have been to be a little bit more specific in your question.

A) Does it backfire thru the carburator or muffler?
B) who makes the engine?
C) Is it a riding, or push mower?
D) Does it run well aside from that?

1 Get a new plug 2 Drain oil 3 Drain gas 4 Get aerosol carburetter cleaner and clean carburetter 5 Make sure fluid plugs are in place, replace fuel filter 6 Fill oil to specification 7 Fill gas 8 Put in new plug (with correct gap) Start mower and run for 10 minutes (meanwhile check for leaks). Cut some grass.

As it is with all 4 cycle engines....if you have a backfire, it is caused, typically, by bad timing. Your shear-pin may be getting ready to break. If you or anyone has hit something with it, you may have damaged this part. Take the shroud off then pull the flywheel. The shear-pin AND points are under there. Just replace it and you're on your way....Good luck Another thing to consider is gas. Poor gas CAN cause this too.

It's either the flywheel key (which it won't be if you neve hit anything) or the carb is running rich..... also whens the last time the air filter was replaced?
I've seen some just backfire all they're lives.... unless this is a new thing thats happened to it?

Try to replace the flywheel key. If there is a slight shear mark on it it can cause the timing to be off. It could be on times when it does it that there is too much gas entering the intake. I have also seen it where the valve seat was loose. When it comes completely loose it will quit running. I have lightly peened the area around the seat to seat it better. It could also be the points if you have them, or the rub block. Thomas S.

You may have water in your gas. Empty gas out and refill with fresh gas, you might also try adding a half bottle 16 ounces of rubbing alcohol. You can buy products out there that will do just as well but they are a bit more expensive.

A little excess fuel in the cylinder from when you shut it off. Only does it when the motor is still hot? Let it run at slow speed before you shut it off.
