I have a HND in graphic design, which I gained around 8 years ago. I have since been working full time as a graphic designer.

I would really like to top up my HND to a degree to increase my career prospects in the future, as I have been working for the last 8years or so and have a hefty mortgage the possibility of attending a full time course is slim to none!

I would like to embark on a distance learning course but the obvious channel of the open university is not really what I want as they do not offer any subjects in a creative area, art, graphics, textiles etc. I obviously could do another subject but for such a financial and time consuming commitment it's not what I want. Anyone any sugestions what I could do? or where I could go for further advise?

I have just topped up my HND in sports science to a BSc (Hons) at my local college. I didn't know that such a thing was possible as, when I completed my HND in 2000, they told me that I would have to go on to the 2nd year of a degree course and complete a minimum of 2 years to get my degree. It has taken me 9 months to top up.

I guess I was lucky in that my local college offered the Sports Science option, it certainly kept living and travelling costs down, I only had to go into college for 2 full days which meant I could still work part time to earn some money, and, as a mature student, my fees were paid for and I was able to get financial support.

Try your local college to see if the offer such an option for your subject. Your local careers office will be able to help you and the UCAS web site has a list of courses, many of which will still be available for commencement in September.

Hope this is of help to you and good luck!!

It depends on the college and the qualification - James Watt in Kilwinning and Greenock have some HNDs that you can continue on as a degree course. So check out your local colleges and see what they offer, other wise you need to go to University or the Open University.
