With my fist child I had a faint period for the first trimester and didn't even think I was pregnant, I didn't do a test till I would have been 10 weeks, I had no symptoms at all. I bought the Preg test that actually says "pregnant",
With this latest pregnancy ( I am 17 weeks) I just bought the plain old pink line test. It said to wait a minute or so before checking it, I checked it on the morning of mothers day and after waiting 2 mins, I only saw 1 line, so I just went on believing my period must just be late cause I am stressed, at that point I would have been 4 weeks pregnant. 2 weeks later, still no period, I took the second test out of the box and did that, what a shock when I saw 2 pink lines. I took the first test out of the plastic (dont know why I kept it) and I did actually see a faint pink 2nd line. When I initially did the test, it wasn't there, so I guess I should have waited for longer than the box said.

Most commonly, a woman gets her first positive test after she's already missed a period. Some women can test with the early result tests and find out before they ever even miss their period. Others find out during the time that they should have had it. It varies a lot, but I don't think it'd take quite that long for a positive to show up. At the most it'd be about 5 weeks, with them finding out a week after their missed period.

Now, I've heard of a lot of women not finding out that they're pregnant until they're 6-8 weeks along b/c they didn't realize that it'd been that long since they had a period, or their symptoms was mild. I'm not saying that it couldn't happen, but I've never heard of it.

I think this is unlikely, given the increased sensitivity of today's home pregnancy tests. Every person's body is different, but typically, the hormone that is tested for doubles each day for the first few weeks that a woman is pregnant, and it doesn't take long for this to cause the hormone level to be high enough to be detectable.

Anyone who wants a definitive answer should visit their ob/gyn.

Good luck!
