I am a bit anal about spelling and stuff, so sorry in advance!

I would write: Unfortunately I was unable to answer due to problems with my internet connection.

What you wrote does sound OK, but is quite informal. If it is to a friend or a relative then it is fine, but if it is to someone else I would definitely use "could not". It just looks better!

It is a grammatically correct sentence, but it rather overtly implies the internet is yours (which it isn't) and in any event it was your connection to the internet you had problems with, not the internet itself. A better sentence would be: "I couldn't answer because I had problems with my internet connection."
