take computer engg...if you want to get a high paying job relatively easily. Also in the IT field growth prospects are better. A lot of research goes on in this area. The brightest young people get into this area so your classmates will be very smart too and you will be competing against the best

take civil engg...if you really like that subject. Job prospects arent that great and well only kids that dont get any other branch take it so you can easily top in your class as the really smart ones would have taken CS. But if you really like this field then go for it...sorry i didnt mean to discourage you.

Well technically you can do MTech in any branch irrespective of what area your BTech was. However in reality...you will find it very difficult to get admission in any other brach from the one you did your BTech in....that would be the case in most good institutes like iits or iisc.

Well, dude, that is an interesting question to ask.
Well, I, for one, am doing Computer Science Engineering.
But what you take as a career is what you want to do.You should sit down, and think for yourself, what you want with your life.If you want to do civil engineering, you go for that.If you want to do Computer Science and engineering, you go for that.Similarly, if you want to go for an arts or a humanities subject, it is best to do what you like.
Life is too short to do something just for the heck of it, or just because people are telling you to do something.

Follow your heart. That is the key to ultimate happiness.

as for the technicalities, since you are in India, I can assure you that though Computer Science and Engineering sounds as a very alluring option, and half the crowd wants to follow that, it is a hellishly competitive discipline.Mediocrity will just not survive in it.You will have to be at the top to be anywhere, unless you want to end up spending your life at infosys.
Whereas, if you like civil engineering, I greatly suggest you take it.There is an acute shortage of GOOD civil engineers in our country, and since not many people take that, it will be comparitively less competitive too.[but in no way a walk in the park, again].

As for your other question, I can assure you, that you can do your masters in ANYTHING AT ALL, irrespective of what you do your bacelors in.I have a friend who did Mining from BHU, and now is doing very well in computer science.

Good Luck :)
