The love of programming! is all you need
You will get all the other small things once you have the "love of programming"
- a degree (people care about this - so if you want a job in this field, getting a degree is a good idea)
- a computer and tools - compiler etc (in the absence of this, you can even program in your head, but you can ramp up quickly on tools that others use if you have a computer - seriously, most of the great algorithms designed in the field of computer science were not done on a computer. Again this is only needed if you want a job in this field)
- a good book. I'll recommend Hal Abelson's, Jerry Sussman's and Julie Sussman's "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" (MIT Press, 1984; ISBN 0-262-01077-1),
