The dosage depends on what medicine you are given. There are more than one type of statins out there in the market. In UK, the most frequently prescribed are simvastatin (which indeed can now be bought over the counter) and atorvastatin. Your doctor would know to give you the appropriate dose.
However you will also need to modify your diet to help reduce your cholestrol. This mean low fat diet. Also plenty of light exercise regularly.
It may be advisable to take aspirin as well if your cholestrol is this high and if you have other risk factors of heart disease. Your doctor will know best.

Surely if you had been tested by a qualified person, the correct dosage would be administered.
I have a level of 6.5 - had it for nearly thirty years- and have never been required to take any medication for it.
When I was first tested 6.5 was good, my dad has a level of 8.2, but at eighty years of age, he doesn't think it necessary to start taking anything for it now.

the statin treatment given by your dr will depend on your other cardiovascular risk factors. for example are you male of female, how old are you and what is your systolic blood pressure. this can then be used to calculate your risk level.
statins are now available over the counter (Simvastatin 10mg) and there is a general consensus in the medical community that the majority of people over middle age should be taking a statin for the many increased health benefits that they offer.
