Well don't know why you would not be able to have surgery. But for starts its not the gallstones they remove its the gallbladder they remove. If the stones gets lodged in the ducts it can cause the fluids released from the pancreas to back up back into the pancreas which is very painful and dangerous. Those fluids start eating away at the pancreas most doctors will only let that happen a couple of times and will recommend surgery to take out the gall bladder. Surgery is now done by laser with only 4 small incisions and recover time is cut in half from what it use to be. You can live without the gallbladder not the pancreas. Might have to change your diet some due to the after effects towards onions , salads & spicy foods. But that is nothing compared what will happen if you dont get the gallballer taken out once you start having problems. Always consult a Doctor on this before making a decsion

A lot of pain. One way to reduce the pain would be to have a very low fat diet. The gall bladder releases gall, which helps us digest fats. On a very low fat diet, you could possibly reduce the pain, b/c the gallbladder wouldn't work so hard.

As someone else said, they may be able to be broken up without surgery.

Two things that can happen if they aren't dealt with: It is possible for a stone to go into the duct that leads to the liver, and if that happens it isn't good at all. Also, the person who does nothing will - at best - continue to live with awful pain and be sick.

You will experience pain. At some point you will have to have surgery voluntary or not due to the excruciating pain you will be begging for some emergency room physician to get a surgeon for you. The symptoms usually flare after a meal especially high in fat and cholesterol. It is best to schedule an appointment to see your doctor and schedule recovery time than to have to take unplanned for time.

I would like to know the answer to this myself. I have been having pain in my left side for over five years and my doctors won't perform surgery. They say they can't see anything on the ultrasound. I have heard that sometimes if you wait too long the gallbladder can get infected and burst.

Just schedule the surgery. Faster that way with NO Pain afterwords! Surgery is better than the PAIN of gallstones OR a GALLBLADDER ATTACK!!!

I've known people who had gallstones and the pain is so severe when they pass one that they faint. Then they need surgery anyway. If you or anyone you know has gallstones, by all means, see a doctor.
