You would like to see it, even if only for their own health and for the "aesthetics" of the game. With that said, I don't know how much it really affects their ability to call the game fairly, but being in shape can never hurt - either them, or the game.

The physical condition of MLB umps has improved considerably since the 80's when the likes of John McSherry, The late Eric Greg, Ken Kaiser and others looked like they spent a little too much time at post game buffets.

Well, they don't do a whole lot of batting or running during the game. Anyway, everyone should exercise and diet right, not just umpires.

They should be if they cared about their performance - they sometimes need to be a proper position to make a correct call, and if they aren't in good shape they can't get in position. Proper calling of a stolen base play would be an example of this.

I don,t think it would take being in good physical shape to stand behind home plate and decide which way a baseball is going. they are paid to make decisions, not to play the game!

well thy had an article in the latest espn magazine and umps do some light stretching before games, and they try to stay in ok shape.

They don't really have to move to do their job; they just have to stand in one place and pay attention. Besides, i think it'd be distracting if you had a young, thin guy behind the catcher - it wouldn't look right.

They don't really move. They make bad calls, eject players and managers, get spit on, get yelled at and get hit with balls. What a job.

They get paid big bucks to watch the sport ,not run
