Generally, the National Anthem is played at the end of a function.

In the case of Olympic Games, The National Anthem of the Gold Medallist's country is played, when he receives his medal.

In International Football, the National Anthem of the participating countries is played before they commence the game.

There is no specific guideline on when to play the national anthem. However, whenever the national anthem is played, you are expected to Stand to attention.

Hope I have clarified.

It's generally acceptable, but I think it goes overboard. Having been in a school which forced its students to rise for it every day (along with a unison recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance), there is a point at which you can have too much blind obedience.

The question is really, what does it really mean? Is it an expression of patriotism, or is it just another way to bring nationalistic obedience to a group? It has become a symbol, nothing more, since the vast overwhelming majority of people don't even know the words, let alone what the poetry means or what event the poem refers to.

Therefore, I think it should be played at government functions, things that are on behalf of the government of our country (even things like the Olympics), but not every Tom-****-and-Harry's little league games.

All over the world a national anthems are sung right before you begin or end a state ceremony or a function honouring national heroes, like the Olympic medal ceremony. In our singing we invoke the spirit of the nation to be present, while we celebrate.

And that is the reason most gold medal winners get so overwhelmed while the national anthem is being sung for them. They know that finally they have done something in life that am entire nation can feel proud over.

There is nothing wrong in it. We are accustomed to its recitation at the end of any function, because invariably a function commences with a sort of prayer or lighting of an auspicious lamp or declaring open a building or an event. But, in a secular function, you cannot have a prayer or an invocation. Therefore, in any function of national importance, where there is a display of the national flag, national anthem is recited.
