A line, which has no concept of distance, because the moment he crossed this line the dog would be no longer running into the wood, but running in the wood.

It all depends on the laziness level, or the curiosity of the dog. It might start walking after a while, or it might find a porcupine and follow that crazy thing around until it gets lost.
