By this time, they usually have everything they need and really don't want anything material. But what I like to do is assemble a goodie bag of favorite things. Think of all the little things that make him happy. I do this for my dad a lot. He loves coffee, crosswords, licorice, hand held games, hard candy and me. :)
So I buy him his favorite coffee beans, a crossword book, black jelly beans, bridge mix, nibs, honey roasted peanuts, a hand held poker game, and assorted little candies. Then I put a funny t shirt in there or a nice shirt and wrap it up pretty. You can also put a framed picture in there too.

Actually, giving the best & precious gift is of no impotance. Ur care for anyone is very important.
Just realizing an old tht u really loves & cares for him is the best gift which can cherish his birthday.
Old people don't want gifts. Only care & love

Doing something for him that he can't do himself.
For instance, if he still lives in a home by himself and can't rake the leaves or clean something, do that.
People that age usually aren't into material things.
Another gift you might give him if you think he LIKES material stuff is a photo album filled with old family photos, or collect perhaps his service awards (military parapahnalia), and organize it into a scrapbook of some sort.

While the strip club could be entertaining, a good fishing pole would probably be more apropo.
Of course, maybe Gramps would prefer the club.

No strip clubs unless you know he likes that sort of thing...no more trinkets or nose hair clippers...single malt scotch if its a favorite of his. Dinner at his favorite restaurant or prepare it for him at your home. Let him know you care.

Knowing the men in my congregation, a letter telling them why you respect him, would be the most treasured.
