You are right, good appetite.... somehow loses the meaning. There is no comparison except enjoy your meal which doesn't really do it.
Aussie slang, 'Get your chops around this' ..... very classy.

All languages have words or phrases that no other language has a subsitute for. It depends on the culture. The French have a very large reputation for food. It makes sense that they'd have special vocabulary for it. :) If you want, just say "bon appetit!" We, in America, at least, don't have a cultural phrase to say when we start eating. We just eat. Some say a prayer before their meal. I typically say "Ooh! Yum!" and dig in. ;-)

Bon appetit!: Tuck in! Get stuck in! Eat already! Enjoy! Enjoy your meal! Happy eating! Get your laughing gear round this! Down the hatch! This looks nice!

According to my son, who has taken French class, 'bon apetit' literally translated into English is 'good appetite.'

We usually say 'dig in folks' when we start an informal meal.

you don't necessarily have to say anything to start eating . but there is an English word for drinks i.e. "cheers",
though french say it to say have a good meal and usually in pre modern times french had long dinners and lunches thus the phrase.

We often have phrases, in English, for words in other languages.
Eating is rarely formal here. We dont "say" anything.
