Try scanning for viruses, scanning for spyware, and defragmenting the hard drive. If that doesn't help, you might want to consider upgrading your hardware and operating system.

First of all,if you are still using Win 98 for the net,get rid of it.Its no longer servied by windows.Use a genuine copy of XP service pack 2,coz service pack onwe will also be useless after October.
The reason for the restarts could be a viral or Worm infection that has gone un noticed for a long time, corrupting the boot files.Win 98 has so many security Vulnerabilities that your ordinary antivirus cant fix(which is why its being stashed).

If you have 2 memory chips, switch memory chip positions and run it again.
If that is ok, check to see if Windows installed with ACPI support. If so, it could be your BIOS doesn't support ACPI propery. You can search microsoft knowledgbase and it has articles about forcing a standard bios option install.
You might try changing settings in the bios... that might work. Change one setting at a time and write down what the original setting was.
Note: If you have ACPI enable/disable option in the bios, you can't disable it if Windows 2000 is already installed with that option.
The easiest way to force Windows 2000 into standard bios mode is to install it. When it gets to the screen that says "Press F6 if you need to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver" at the bottom of the screen, press F7.

There should be many different options.
1- It could be a viruses issues.
2-it might be as simple as the power setting.
Right click on the desktop, go to screen saver, then power settings.
3-It might be the program you have installed recently,
My friend has a similar problem, he removed the program he has just installed and it works.
