Seems related to yawning doesn't it? I hate it when their back starts to itch ! I can't reach very far around mine and have to find a corner or something to scratch mine. Guess it's just the power of suggestion.

actually one tends to forget that itching is a good pass time so it is human habit from the time we were primates to do what others did and copy their actions as primates do, as a result when someone is itching it naturally occurs to us to do the same

good question.
the answer is because humans have the tendency to mimic their environment. moreover, the agent that causes the itch may still in the place you're both standing. if it affects him, why don't it also affects you?
