Huh... A vast North African country, former French colony (1830-1962). Long independance war (1954-1962), that costed many many lives.
Than 30 years of power ruled by the FLN (Front de Libération Nationale), I think it was the sole political party allowed for many years. A big times of troubles at the beginning of the 90s, Islamists were about to win the elections, but the 2nd round of elections was cancelled so as to prevent them. Many years of civil war, massacresb lood and tears... Finally, it's now more calm. President is Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Population are mostly Arabs, but there is a strong Kabyle minority (coming from the Berber population, that was in the country before the Arabs coming). Official language is Arab, Kabyle and Berber languages are used in some areas ; French is also still known by a certain amount of the population. I think the majority of the population is near the Mediterranean coastline, only few people in the big Saharian part (where there is natural gas)
Islam is the major religion and the State religion. I think there are some Jewish, Christian and "non believers" minorities, but they must be very low.
Capital : Algiers. Other big towns : Oran, Constantine, Tizi Ouzou, Sétif, Tamanrasset, Tlemcen...

Algeria is located in N.Africa.Algeria one of Largest Saharan Countries(I think 2nd after Mauritania).90% of its land is covered by Sahara. Most of the population resides on its northern Meditteranean Coast. Algeirs is its capital.
