Maybe a bus (kidding)

Why not try a Jeep Cherokee or a Hummer, or a station wagon.

Station wagon.

See if you can find a Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable wagon with a third rear seat on used car lots if you want a cheap 3-row wagon. Or one of the old (240, 740, 940) Volvo wagons, as they're built like tanks.

If you have more money, check out some of the Mercedes luxury wagons.

Range Rovers are auwful, and ugly. The ML350 is not big enough and neither is the x5. You probably want a seven passenger car. I would look at the XC90 SUV by Volvo, it's a seven seater, and it's very safe and stylish. The Acura MDX also has seven seats as does the Toyota Landcruiser/Lexus LX.

Honda Pilot is a good choice. It has place for 8.
Acura MDX is great too.

I know you did not want a MiniVan, but why not? They drive
better than SUVs, likely are safer than SUVs, cost thousands less, have better mileage, are designed with kids in mind, have convenient features such as powered double sliding doors, powered hatch back etc.
Honda Odyssey is excellent. I have been driving one for 5 years and am very pleased with it.

I'd recommend something with a third-row seat. I love my Suburban, but it's not great on gas mileage. The Honda Pilot also has an optional third row seat, and gets better gas mileage.

Good luck to you!

having had 3 children and now having 8 grandchildren i have found that something more compatible is a suburban or something similar to that. some suv's are also good choices.
