I have a movie DVD in European (Region 2) format that I want to copy onto a new DVD so that the movie can be viewed in the US (Region 1).

How?

With conventional studio-released movies you cant. DVDs contain an encryption method called CSS that the vast majority of DVD copy and authoring software honours- the software will generally just flat out refuse to back it up for you.

There may be hacks, dodgy software, etc, out on the internet that allow you to circumvent this. I wouldnt really know. ;) Others may suggest this.

On the other hand, have you considered making the playback drive (or standalone DVD player, if thats what we're talking about) 'region-free'? Usually very easy to do and not illegal.

Just google for 'region-free' and your drive name. For example, I have a £40.00 player here that, by pressing keys in a certain order, will play any region. Its not a hack, the manufacturer designed it this way.
