It's a new technology trying to solve the problem with the heating and speed of the processor
Nowadays the processor is going to be bigger and bigger in frequency (GHz) to make it run faster and faster. But the bigger the frequency, the more heat it produce.
So intel duo is design to solve the heating problem
Intel duo is mainly for multitasking
If you run several applications simultaneously very often, intel duo will perform better

The new Core 2 Duo is the future of Intel. It is based on the Pentium M, which was the mobile laptop CPU that's been out for a couple of years (you may have heard it called the Centrino).
When Intel came out with the P4 six years ago, they abandoned the older Pentium III architecture instead of reshaping it. They came up with an entirely new architecture that ultimately hurt Intel in the longrun, since AMD stuck with the successful Athlon all these years. The Athlon was more efficient per MHz and used less power. The Core 2 Duo is really a modified Pentium III, and is the knock-out blow to AMD that Intel has been waiting for.
It outperforms anything AMD can throw at it right now. Best of all, it runs cooler and sucks up even less power than any other CPU out there, mainly because it is blazing fast at low speeds (a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo can easily crush a 3.6GHz P4 or a 2.6GHz Athlon X2). This isn't just a small leap in performance either. We haven't seen this kind of advance in CPU technology since the original Pentium came out.
This article will explain more about it if you're interested:
