If you don't mind the violence in some of these (and I'm not particularly an old-school martial arts fan, btw:)
Full Contact - one of Chow Yun-Fat's best (actually, he's one of my favorite actors...a few of these star him)
God of Gamblers
A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2
City Hunter (I know a lot of people, even Jackie Chan fans, hate this one, but it actually captures the spirit of the anime quite well, and as someone who thinks most of Jackie's films are too silly to begin with, at least this one is deliberate)...then again:
Drunken Master 2...possibly Chan's best ever, and as old school as you can get in modern style
Hard Boiled (absolute must see)
Naked Killer (as over the top as they get)
Black Mask (also way over the top, but great Jet Li)
okay, so Fist of Legend...definitely a classic too...
that covers a wide range, I think...and I certainly wouldn't steer anyone away from any of the other suggestions here...enjoy your viewing...:)

I am a horror movie fanatic and I would say that one of the best movies in this genre is the Shining. It may seem like a slasher at the beginning of the movie but it is very intense and it gets into your head. Jack Nicholson is incredible in this movie and its just a classic. Another movie I would suggest would be An American Werewolf In Paris; this movie is incredible because it is psychological but it gives you a different look at the transformation into a werewofl that is deeply disturbing. Both movies are great and are classics.

If you want some kick-butt martial arts, beautiful cinematography, and intriguing story lines, I recommend the following:

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" starring Chow Yun-Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi and Chang Chen

"Hero" starring Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi, Maggie Cheung, and Tony Leung Chiu Wai

"House of Flying Daggers" starring Zhang Ziyi, Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Dandan Song

All 3 of these are in my personal DVD collection. Fabulous and beautiful movies.
