I think it all depends.
It depends on what style your going for. If you're going for a fancy look, wearing more than two pair would probably be too much. If you're going for the punk look, there's really no limit. If you're going for a professional look, no more than one.
It also depends on what type of earrings you have. If you're wearing a bunch of dangling earrings that are crashing into one another and you can't tell where one begins and one starts.. That's just a little unclassy. If you've got a few different size hoops in, that usually looks nice. If you're wearing simple stud earrings, you can wear quite a few and look good.
Depends on who you are and what you're going for. If you're just doing the every day, "regular" style... I wouldn't go over three.

Do you have to be wearing a new pair all the time? Or do you have a favorite pair that you like to wear a lot?
If you want to be wearing different ones all the time, I recommend buying them cheap from places like Claire's and Icing... if you really just want ONE defining pair of earings, I recommend looking around.
I know my girlfriend bought 18 pairs of earrings from Claires recently. And she only paid about 14 dollars. She doesn't care much for earrings, she just wears them so her piercings won't close up.
It's up to you.... luckily, there are a LOT of options when it comes to earrings. If you're the kind of girl who likes to be wearing different ones all the time, I recommend getting an earring box..... and when that box starts to overflow... that's when you'll know you've gotten too many :)

do you mean having them in a box and wearing them pair by pair? they're never too many.
but if you refer to wearing them at once, i guess more than 4-5 earrings would look scary.

there are no too many earrings..earrings are part of the fashion too..they changed so fast..so..buy as many as you like =)
