Well I need to write about this topic for my course, I need some public opinion. Are nurses still thought of as being domestic helpers in hospitals or has that role changed? Are men now starting to enrole as nurses or is it still an all female job?

Unfortunately, yes. I've noticed that certain cultures treat us as servants. And I don't think most people know how much education nurses really need - years of prerequisites and a bachelor's degree, it can end up taking 6 yrs or more to get the RN. And, worse still, everyone in scrubs is "the nurse" to the patient, they don't know the difference.

Even some doctors have that perception. I've met plenty who are very unsavory and make jokes about nurses. Lots of doctors married to nurses - multiple nurses, one right after the other.

We do have male nurses but they tend to congregate in the OR, ICU, ER and cardiac floors. Don't see many males in the PACU, psych, med-surg, OB, oncology, NICU, pediatrics.

most people in developed countries dont like to do odd jobs; that is why many asians, esp south east asian men and women get a degree in nursing and go to developed countries to become nurses.

i dont personally think they are seen as domestic helpers; its a two-fold scenario with one side wanting to be part of the medical profession with less stress than a doc and the other needing the financial benefits that goes with it that he/she cannot get in his/her own country of origin.

men make better nurses bec they have strong physique; and i personally think that basing on my point of view, it is no longer restricted to an only female thing when men are to earn their keeps in their chosen profession and interest.

I think to some degree it still exists but not as much as it used to.
But lets face it, gender does "generally" play a part in how we go about our business and will always exist in society.
