Not for anyone just getting into Lou, I can't say, but I've always thought "Berlin" was one of his best too...but extremely downbeat, musically and lyrically...I might recommend the third Velvet Underground album, just called "The Velvet Underground"...it's the one with Pale Blue Eyes and What Goes On on it, and it's probably the most melodic of the Velvets' albums...actually, I'd say start with the original Velvet Underground albums anyway..."Velvet Underground and Nico," White Light White Heat," and "Loaded," which has the original version of Sweet Jane on it (get the double disk special edition if you can find it)...if you want to spring for it, the "Between Thought and Expression" 3-CD set is as comprehensive a retrospective as you're ever going to find on Lou...not easy to find, but I also think "Street Hassle" is worth a listen, and "Transformer" is a must...if you're interested in similar music besides Lou himself, I could recommend "Horses" by Patti Smith, and "Catholic Boy" by the Jim Carroll Band (both of whom were very strongly influenced by Lou and particularly the Velvets)

"Sweet Jane" was a Velvet Underground song, from the album LOADED, so you may want to check out Lou's work with that band. For solo Lou, though, I'd have to agree with Lordd Virgil and say that the live album ROCK 'N' ROLL ANIMAL may have been the best. The band that played on that album eventually became Alice Cooper's touring band, during the WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE tour. They were also Bette Midler's backing band in the movie, "THE ROSE." But, you didn't ask that did you? ROCK 'N' ROLL ANIMAL, with the Bob Ezrin produced studio album, BERLIN, coming in a close second, though it does take a lot of getting used to as it is - as they say - an experimental concept type of thing... very adventurous, but worthwhile.

Velvet Underground with Nico. Some gritty heartwrenching songs on that album. Heroin is particularly touching.
