depends on the situation. If you're just singing by yourself anything goes. If accompanied by a musician or a band go for the slower blues or soul tunes as they usually follow a logical 12 bar structure they are easy to follow with the text. The musicians all know this structure and usually these songs contain a few louder parties that really let you demonstrate your voice!!

we hae to know certain things about you and your voice. Your age? your vocal range, your "comfort zone", or range, (are you comfotable singing high or low?) Is this acappela? What styles suit you best? Quickly assess these things and get back to me. There are many suitable songs you can do. I am a pianist, have lots of experience as a vocal coach, in fact my daughter is a fabulous singer (her teacher is an active opera singer in NYC). I can help...let's go!

Don't pick song and learn it just for the competition.
Think about songs that you are familiar with(generally common one) and make sure you are comfort in singing them. This will really do good. Annoy others.
Trust me!

that depends to your voice.
tell us if your soprano, etc., or if you can sound like mariah, etc..

it is better if youre very familiar with a song that youd sing to be safe...

please do not try Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey. it is very very difficult to beat them, it will only embarrass you, and this not what you are really want, do you ,so try something simple but power full. try Pink, or some one who has rhythm and less vocal power.
