Because so few travel and now there dumbing down the kiddies,so they dont ask to many questions about what happens in their country...sad...sad...
Americans are far from alone in the world, but from the perspective of many young Americans, we might as well be. Most young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 demonstrate a limited understanding of the world, and they place insufficient importance on the basic geographic skills that might enhance their knowledge.
Young Americans answer about half (54 percent) of all the survey questions correctly. But by and large, majorities of young adults fail at a range of questions testing their basic geographic literacy.
Only 37% of young Americans can find Iraq on a map—though U.S. troops have been there since 2003.
6 in 10 young Americans don't speak a foreign language fluently.
20% of young Americans think Sudan is in Asia. (It's the largest country in Africa.)
48% of young Americans believe the majority population in India is Muslim. (It's Hindu—by a landslide.)
Half of young Americans can't find New York on a map.
These results suggest that young people in the United States—the most recent graduates of our educational system—are unprepared for an increasingly global future. Far too many lack even the most basic skills for navigating the international economy or understanding the relationships among people and places that provide critical context for world events.
About the Survey
The findings presented are the results of a face-to-face survey conducted from December 17, 2005, to January 20, 2006, by Roper Public Affairs and Media, a part of GfK NOP. This study is the latest in a series of surveys commissioned by the National Geographic Society.

Obviously your educational system isn't exactly the best either, seeing as how you can't even use proper grammer. Yet I, an American, can. I am not a blind sheep, I am a human, there is a difference. My government will not slaughter me, only governments under terrorist rule does that. If people could see what was wrong with their country, they wouldn't be ignorant, would they? We Americans do not think we are the only developing 1st world country on the planet. However, we do know that we tend to be ahead of everyone else in most if not every category.

I doubt most people even think of it that way? Americans love and appreciate other countries. We do the most world travelling and we give out the most foreign aid. We don't claim to be the best, most educated, or that our system is perfect or even adequate. We have a less socialist system because of the whole anti-communist thing, which we're still getting over. I think if it works in other countries and people are suffering here, we will eventually get around to trying some new things like socialized medicine? Being such a huge country, with all our disorganized states, coming to a consensus is difficult, and we feel like we have to stick our noses out because in WWII if we'd acted earlier instead of waiting for them to attack us, we'd have helped a lot more people. Sure this Iraq mess was a huge mistake and George W is a complete moron and an embarrassment to all Americans. But he'll go away and I am confindent things will change and continue to improve, for us and everyone else too. Helping others isn't necessarily the best judge of a great country. What we need is people who are good at what they do, work hard, make good decisions. We're fighting our own people half the time over their backwards religious beliefs which are clearly slowing down progress. And there's so many dumb people out there, but since it's so easy to make money here, we don't feel like we need to change. Who can blame us for working hard and making money?

First of all hate boy. We know exactly where we stand in the world on many things including education, standard of living, health care and a whole slew of other statistics. We know that we are not perfect or the best at everything.
We don't claim to be, how you say, " the ONLY developing 1st world country on the planet".
What we have is the freedom to solve our problems without constantly being at one another throats. You see a lot of verbal assaults from people on the left and right in America but at the end of the day we haven't murdered those that disagree with us. We work together at our jobs and have a sense of decency towards one another even if we don't agree.
Don't buy into all of the fear mongering going on here. It just politics American style. Our army will not turn on their own brothers and sisters and if something should happen along those lines our population is armed to the teeth and will deal with it.

I agree with what you have said. I have a close friend who is american and I once asked him what he learnt at school, he told me and I was shocked at the lack of knowledge given about other countries. When I told him what I learnt at high school, he was shocked...
I know that it isn't the people of America's fault, but they should do something about it. Ignorence is a terrible affliction especially when they have as much power as they do.
I also worry about the health insurence situation in the states...From what I can tell, it is SO expensive to have insurence and then there is gaps and holes you can drive a truck through.
Land of the free?? Not sure if that's true, if a majority of the population cant afford adequate health care which in my opionion a long with education and food is a basic human right.
And on that note, Australia has it's problems, England has it's problems, China, Japan, and the rest all have their problems...this isn't isolated to America.
cg_ansel - Where was america when Australia asked you to help in East Timor...Oh yeah...no where, Australia and New Zealand took care of the peace keeping mission...So don't sit there and say how you've always helped the rest of the world, because that is crap. Where was America in the begining of WW2..? When millions of Jews were sent to concentration camps and to their deaths,no where...you only came into it AFTER the japanese attacked Pearl Harbour, which was 4 years after the war began and you sit there and say you won the war??? How can you win a war that you only fought for 1 year... but you ask Australia and New Zealand and England to help you fight this bullshit war , and we join you, but you wont help us...It's ****** up and your comments are the reason why the rest of the world finds you rather annoying. So pull your head in, look to history and try your very best not to be an ignorant ****, and see that through most of history America has only ever served to help America and no one else...

Who feeds the world?
America feeds 85% of the world
you accuse us then hold your hand out
when you get in trouble
then who do you call on?
We sacraficed all to help the world and this is the thanks
we get?
Fine, get rid of us and you will see who starves.
Our missionaries are fantastic, helping build homes, our doctors volunteer in Africa
We cure not only our own injured soldiers but others soldiers as well.
So stop okay? We are doing the best that we can.
As for education, it was left in the third world countries teachings and now all our kids are new agers cause an angry athiest woman wont let them pray in school. Sorry we were niaive, but no more.
Pray in school all day long.

America is not perfect, yet I have to comment on these anti-American postings. Have any of you non-Americans ever been to the United States for any considerable length of time? When you do visit, do you stay in your hotel in a big city and do not mingle and get to know the people who live in the smaller cities or the rural areas? When you come here for work or school, do you live around other international people and refuse to mingle with Americans to get to know them? Have you ever taken into consideration it is your own country's educational system that is biased and anti-American? When you do come here to work or go to school, did you ever think about picking up a history book and reading about the background of the United States? To be ethnocentric is something not unique to Americans.

Well most of us don't think we're the only developing 1st world country. But there are not many others! Yes, I agree our health care system is tooooo expensive. But, did you know our government pay for social security (medical, food, housing, transportation) for all disabled or elderly people as well as mothers? We have wonderful health care in USA, but its too expensive for those who are simply working in restaurants or some job like that. Also, everyone over the age of 60 and under 18 are covered by the government.
As for education, we aren't the best and aren't the worst. But our "stinky"government, as you would say, pays for ALL children to go to school, and also will arrest parents for not sending their children to school. Many of the asian (China, Japan) and european countries are also well developed like AMerica. MOst of us know that.
I am against our current president. He's a complete moron. Don't judge all Americans on the basis of him.

nicely i'm from Australia and often love all races. yet right here's a run-down of possibly why: u . s .: you're fat. you're conflict starters. you recognize no longer something approximately the different custom. you're regularly un-intellegent and picture college/"college" is usually a huge social gathering. you do no longer mixture in nicely while traveling distant places. you're loud and disruptive on the terrific of circumstances. You create the biggest quantity of pollutants interior the international reletive on your inhabitants. You carry weapons for no reason different than to "grant your self with protection". you think of the international is "jealous" of you. Did you think of approximately those motives??? it rather is quite feasible that those are the excuses why human beings think of much less of america of a and can choose to pass to a secure, healthy, exceedingly, exciting place like Canada. i'm particular it rather is not any longer in basic terms the Canadian team that dislike you. I guess there'd be a lot of different communities that are thinking precisely a similar ingredient, yet in basic terms have not stated it out loud to the media like that striker has. think of the style you will possibly sense if the english/brazilian/argentinian/german men's soccer communities easily destroyed your u . s . men's soccer team... the international might throw a social gathering and supply america of a the two finger solute.

The US is one of the few developed countries that does not have a declining population. If economic growth rates remain the same China and the US will each control about one third of the world's economy in twenty years. The European share of the world's economy will only be about ten percent.
