Love is not about being selfless. It is about being gracious, compromising, and understanding.

No I don't. I have expressly forbidden my husband to even ask our kids to look after us jokingly when we are old.
I do what I do for my family because "I want to do it for them".
If when my kids grow up and they take care of us because they want to fine else we will manage like countless others are .
When you give without expecting anything in return it is selflessly given.
To answer you question:Parents have expectations from their children. All parents want the best and they do push their children to try and achieve it but if they dont it does not mean that they will love their kids any less than they do now.So yes, most parents do love selflessly.

If you "expect" something back...that isnt love. Love gives all freely..asking for nothing in return...has no alterior motives. Love is NOT conditional.
In NO way do I expect my son to "keep" me when I am old. On the contrary, I hope and pray to NOT be a burden to him..His life is his own..to live, to love, to laugh....

i follow what you are saying....
when people do things "out of love", sometimes they're trying to prove what a good person they are, so even if one does a good deed for someone, even with absolutely no strings attached, he/she does it to 1) feel good about being so generous (which is not a bad thing) or to 2)gain a sort of acceptance from another person (which, as long as you're not putting yourself in a potentially abusive situation is not bad either).
conclusion-doing things out of love may be just a means to an end to a sort of self gratification.
but that does not mean we shouldn't love one another or ignore our mothers when they are old.

"Love can NEVER be selfless..." I beg to disagree! I rather suspect that your statement actually applies to you. Poor you. In other words, you only give love when you expect something in return, especially from your very own kids? tsk! tsk! tsk!
