Im trying to put an old hard drive out of one computer into a new computer, the old HDD had windows 98SE and the one i am trying to put in has windows XP already loaded on it from before, is there a way to make it work with the computer without having to completely reinstall the O.S.? because i dont have a disc for windows. I can get to where it says a major system change has occured and how i want to boot it up, then it loads a few files and then flickers a blue screen and restarts... i can also get into BIOS if there is a way to set it up from there, thanks!

Unfortunately you will need to reinstall Windows XP if you want that as the operating system.

The blue screen you are getting is a Stop error. It states "Unmountable boot device"

This is because the HDD with Win XP came from a different computer with a different systemboard and now the new one doesnt match the HAL in Windows.

You should be able to boot the computer with the Win 98 HDD although you will need to reinstall most, if not all, of the device drivers.

In your BIos setting make sure you are booting from the drive you want to run (XP or 98) so make the Xp the master Drive by changing the pin settings. Make sure you second Harddrive is set to slave. Now make sure your Bios has read it and put it second in line eg.either as primary slave or secondary slave depending wich ide you have installed it on.
If you do not know how to set the pins then go to your second ide make the old HDD the Master (just lave it like it was) and check again in your bios that now you Xp HDD is the PRIMARY(or 0 depending on your bios)master and the old HDD is THe SECONDARY master.
Now you can choose from witch Harddrive to boot from study your Bios settings to find out.
Assuming you boot from xp that is how the system was set to load from the primary master some system but let you nominate the HDD you want to boot from regardless of the the IDE PM PS or SM SS .
Ihope you understand what I mean I'm getting a bit giddy
contact me if you need more help
Take care

Yes It can be done without the removing OS provided u want to use both HDD together in same system.
You have to make sure that the HDD u want to put in another system should not be the boot device.
Your boot device should be the HDD with Windows XP preinstalled.

If u don't want to use both HDD then u need OS CD.

I'm just adding info onto kryptonboy22's answer

The jumper on each hard drive needs to be moved to either slave or master. Most HDDs have diagrams about how to set the jumpers. You get to choose which OS you want.

remove the jumper on the harddisk with win98. its a square like something connected on the pins. to make the SE hd as secondary drive and XP drive as the primary. no need to configure on BIOS.
