Hands down (or feet!) -- it's Pele.
Pele was not only the goodwill ambassador for the sport for many years, but:
Pele was a pioneer. But he also brought the complete package -- speed, agility, passing and scoring prowess, and in essence, set the standard for the Maradonas and Zidanes who followed him.
Other strengths which outweigh the others:
(1) He was a team player
(2) He was never involved in a scandal
(3) His skills were legendary (like the others, which is all they had that he didn't have)
(4) Pele had a smile that could melt hearts.
(5) He competed not only for his nation, but was a star in the first North American Soccer League.
FINALLY -- Pele was the most recognizable football (soccer) player in the world before it became the global sport it is today.

I guess Pele was the best ever player, but he played so many decades ago! Since 1970 football slowly changed, switching to a more physio and tactical demanding team sport. It's a quite impossible task to compare Pele to modern players.
I've seen live both Maradona and Zidane, and needs to say Maradona was better. Their skills were close to a draw, but such a player can everytime carry the whole team on his shoulders and lead it to win. He had the needed charisma, Zidane hadn't. He wasn't a natural born leader as Maradona, Platini, Matthaus were. Like Roberto Baggio, he was outstanding in skills and great plays, but both were too shy to fully lead a team.
So my ranking is
Pele - Maradona - Zidane
Please note I'm Juventus and Zidane fan and I was HATING Maradona when he was playing in Napoli... anyway he was a champion and a leader.

Maradona, Zidane then Pele. Pele played in an era that has no defenders.

Zidane of course. He left football on the highest stage, a World Cup final; and with A BANG!, using his head, not just to butt Materrazi but to dribble and move the French team from no-hoppers in the beginning to the final.
Pele and Maradona were good, but while Pele left the stage with more like a whimper, Maradona was a cocaine user and tested positive to the drug several times. And he was always a cry baby when they lost.

Definitely Zidane, sorry for the others but soccer rhythm has changed and now has become so fast making it more difficult to succeed and at his 30's he still has much better timing than most young players.....
or Maradona and Pele at that age....

while each and every one of these three truly qualifies for the ultimate vote, I'd say Pele is really #1. For he did it when there was no football factory around (like in Zidane's time). Also he is rather moderate as a person (although infamously money - hungry nowadays), as opposed to Maradona who often looked like a crazy nut in a delerium while 'passing'.. but that's just my opinion :-)
