I keep seeing these commercials on TV talking about ..."did you know that a virus can cause cervical cancer in women, called human papalova virus or HPV" ....You all do know that HPV = Herpes Virus.

A couple friends of mine didnt put the two together, but if you think about this, we knew that certain std's can lead to cervical cancer and this is one of the reason for regular OB/GYN visits.

You are absolutely incorrect.

HPV is not the same virus as Herpes types. You are giving your friends misinformation if you are telling them that they are the same.
Most STDs are bacterial and do not lead to cancer, but to other problems with the genital tract, like PID.

NO....... HPV does not = Herpes Virus. Before you start spouting your "knowledge"....maybe you should read up on the two very different viruses.

Herpes Simplex 1 and 2 = Herpes Virus/ Cold Sores/Fever Blisters and genital Herpes.
The most common herpes viruses are herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Usually HSV-1 causes cold sores or fever blisters on or around the lips and HSV-2 affects areas below the waist, causing genital herpes. But both HSV-1 and HSV-2 viruses can cause herpes outbreaks in either area. Other common herpes infections include chicken pox and shingles which are caused by the herpes zoster virus.

Genital herpes is caused by a contagious virus that spreads through intimate skin-to-skin contact. The disease is widespread in the United States. It is estimated that at least 45 million people have genital herpes. That means that 1 out of 5 people (teenage and over) are infected with the herpes virus. Anyone who is sexually active, even with just one person, can get genital herpes. There are up to 1 million new cases each year, and, in fact, genital herpes is now more common than diseases like diabetes and asthma. Once you have the virus in your body, there is no known way to get rid of it.

Up to 90% of people with genital herpes have not been diagnosed and are unaware of their condition. Many of these people have symptoms they don't recognize or that they confuse with something else. Others may not have genital herpes symptoms at all, but can still spread the disease.
These are not detected by a PAP test. You have to have the blisters to culture to know that you have Herpes.

Human Papillomavirus= Warts genital or otherwise. This is the virus that has some strains which cause cervical cancer.

What are the different types of HPV?

There are more than 100 types of HPV. Most of them are relatively harmless, like the ones that cause common warts found on hands and feet. For most people, the body’s own defense system will clear the virus.
About 30 types of HPV affect the genital area:

“High-risk” types (such as HPV Types 16 and 18) can cause cervical cancer or abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix that sometimes turn into cancer.

“Low-risk” types (such as HPV Types 6 and 11) can cause genital warts and benign (abnormal, but noncancerous) changes in the cervix.

All types of genital HPV can cause abnormal Pap tests. And a person can have more than one type of HPV.
All of this might seem a bit complicated, so there is one simple thing to remember: if you have any questions or concerns, speak with your doctor. Talking with your doctor is the best way for you to get the right answers.

HPV-Human Papillomavirus is Genital Warts...NOT HERPES

Genital warts, also known as condylomata acuminata or venereal warts, are one of the most common types of sexually transmitted diseases. As the name suggests, genital warts affect the moist tissues of the genital area. They may look like small, flesh-colored bumps or have a cauliflower-like appearance. Genital warts may be as small as 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter — smaller than the width of a ballpoint pen refill — or may multiply into large clusters.

In women, genital warts can grow on the vulva, the walls of the vagina, the area between the external genitals and the anus, and the neck of the uterus. In men, they may be found on the tip or shaft of the penis, the scrotum or the anus. They can also develop in the mouth or throat of a person who has had oral sexual contact with an infected person.

Although genital warts can be treated with medications and surgery, they are a serious health concern. The virus that causes them — the human papillomavirus (HPV) — has been associated with cervical cancer. It has also been linked with other types of genital cancers.
