S&M refers to Sadism and Masochism, an act that is often involved in sex. Sadism is when people get [sexual] pleasure from hurting someone [it can be minor - like spanking - or major - like actually murdering someone] and masochism is when people get [sexual] pleasure from hurting themselves or someone else hurting them.

Presumably, Mimi would come in contact with people into this through her job as a prostitute.

Sadism and Masochism (aka sadomasochism) - sexual gratification from inflicting (in the case of sadism) and/or feeling (in the case of masochism) pain. Ya know, the whips and chains stuff.
