Few years ago it was consider a very hot subject for a student in computer science to study.

Student with a degree in artificial intelligence, at least in USA were able to command almost double the starting salary of computer science major.

In this field of study you learn to manipulate both the hard ware and the soft ware and come up with a system that performs like human brain(close enough analogy). In fact you are learning to create an intelligent system (like a robot-close enough).

That is why it was termed Artificial Intelligence.

It is mainly useful in electronic gadgets.AI stands for Artificial Intelligence.AI means ability of Electronic Gadgets or appliances to act and *think* like humans.Suppose you say "hi!" to it then it would reply "hi!" or "Hello!".Because it is programmed to do so.Actually the AI gadgets doesn't think but they are programmed to answer as required. This is mainly used in robots.

It is a machine that is able to learn and adapt to it's environment. We have basic ai's now, in robots that can control, plan and schedule, the ability to answer diagnostic and consumer questions, handwriting, speech, and facial recognition.

Interesting fact: In the post-dot com boom era, websites such as 'Ask Jeeves' and 'Ask Cheggers.com' have sprung up that use a simple form of AI to provide answers to questions by searching the internet.

It is a branch of computer science. and no its not limited only with ROBOTS. Every IC (intergrated circuit) and chip in your computer has been programmed to execute a specific task. For e.g, the Calculator Application in Windows is work because it has been programmed to do so......this is A.I. i.e Programming Machines to do any desired task.
