Most of the answers are correct, I'll just add this for affect: if you watch the movie, when they say "to S&M" Angel gets down on his knees in front of Collins, who pretends to slap him- a theatrical example of S&M. Also, I would like to point out to Mary that Mimi is NOT a prostitute, she is a dancer at a strip club where they may practice tamer forms of S&M, (as Roger says "they used to tie you up") but she not a prostitute.

S&M stands for sadism (hitting someone) and Masochism( being hit) both are a sexual practice from a simple swat on the butt to full fledged whippings and caning. Not my style but many people enjoy it.

S&M is more than just hitting or being hit. Sadism - the enjoyment of inflicting pain on another (from the Marquis de Sade who was apparently a very sick individual). Masochism - the enjoyment of having pain inflicted on oneself, or inflicting pain on oneself (like, you hurt yourself and like it).

S&M refers to Sadism and Masochism, an act that is often involved in sex. Sadism is when people get [sexual] pleasure from hurting someone [it can be minor - like spanking - or major - like actually murdering someone] and masochism is when people get [sexual] pleasure from hurting themselves or someone else hurting them.

Presumably, Mimi would come in contact with people into this through her job as a prostitute.
