Im a supporter of building ones own PCs, which isnt very hard and is quite rewarding. That said, I would recommend Dell over gateway or emachines. Though emachines has made great strides in recent years.

eMachines is owned by Gateway. Gateway is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than dell. They arn't well built, like look at their recall that left like 5 million people battery less and maybe even with a blown up laptop. Everything that everyone else said is based on opinion. Mine is base on logic. When was the last time you heard that a Gateway computer blew someones home up?

My honest opinion anything is better than gateway- go the extra mile and spend the extra money for a more reliable comp such as HP or even dell in some cases I own a dell laptop and I use it just what I need it for nothing on my comp goes unused.. The real meaning behind that if you get a new comp Customize it yourself Buy direct from the company. and by all mean stay the hell away from gateway they will cost you more money in the long run!!

Not really. The low end models are usually all the same. I personally wouldnt get a gateway though. You get what you pay for. Just remember to get that insurance policy that they will fix it if anything goes wrong.
I've gotten an XPS from Dell and I can tell you, if you get a high end comp, you want all the possible insurance on it. THere is just too much room for malfunction. My XPS was in the shop 1/3 of the first year.

I think they were better than most Gateways before Gateway bought them out, but who knows what you're getting now. I would go with a mid-priced or upper end Dell over EMachine

I don't know but all I can tell you is my first pc was an e-machine. And it worked fine for about a year after that things just started breaking down. I had to replace the power suppy the mother board and the cpu. Ive heard good things about dells. Haven't heard anything about gateway. So my advice is I would avoid e-machines yea they are cheap but they are cheap made which will cost you more money in the long run. Try HP,Dell, I have an HP laptop and it runs good and is realiable. Good Luck

emachines have a good reability just like dell. but dell laptops are the best of all the three from what i heard. emachines have better value. personally i think dell computers aren't really that great. they have really bad tech support.
but if your spending over a grand for your pc. i would stick with dell. emachines are good if your in a tight budget and that's it

No, one brand is not better than the other. This answer pertains to the hardware you buy, not to the services that a company offers. Each of these Personal Computer manufacturers uses the same parts from the same sources. The parts are connected in a standard way. So the judgement by brand name should rely only on features such as services provided, not on the actual hardware being purchased. Ultimately, I recommend a "white box" (no-name) system, because they too use the exact same parts as the name brand.

Emachines are crap. I used to have one that was nothing but problems, and one of my sister's former coworkers had similar problems with his.
Dell makes the best computers that I have seen and most everyone I know has one and they all love them.
