i hate it...it may be a part of a culture, but it is a cruel part and all cultures have $hitty things in them like bull fighting. i like it when the matadors get gored by the bull horns it's what they deserve for disrespecting life like that.

Bottom line, it's part of a culture. Being cool or heroic is subjective to people of diffferent culture, values, beliefs, tastes and preference.

I find it cool - specially the story behind. Usually, the matador would offer his "hunt" to a lady (sometimes present) in the crowd. When my brother watched it one time in Barcelona, The matador offered a flower to the woman he was courting in the normal daily life. While the crowd was shouting in admiration, the woman was in tears walking down the "stadium" to accept the flower. That was the last time the see each other because the matador died that day. Anyway, sometimes, the matador creates his "flower" on the bull's back (I think, the same level of pain when cows are being branded with red-hot metal iron). Then comes the finale - just one strike of the sword to put the bull down. This part takes an incredible amount of precision skills and guts - facing a charging bull...one sword for the matador, two horns of death for the bull. Just one strike and the story ends - OLE!!!!. Stories may vary but many times, of romantic gestures.

Bull fighting in Europe and South America involves people displaying a certain athletic grace which is almost balletic as they face a bull which has been raised to attack. Generally the bull fighter (matador, picador, etc) eventually kills the bull. If the fight was particularly graceful, the fighter is awarded the ears of the animal as a trophy. The meat is usually distributed to poor people. Some people think it's "cool" (it certainly requires courage!), but many people do not.
Here in Japan, there is another type of bull fighting in which 2 bulls face each other and push each other around a ring, much the same way sumo wrestlers do. As far as I know, neither bull is killed. That seems "cooler" to me ...

I like American bull fighters(rodeo clowns) myself. They're entertaining and serve a purpose. They also take on a bull unarmed and do not harm anyone.
