Not necessarily. The rainbow IS actually the common symbol for the gay community, but merely wearing one does not mean you're gay. People are just quick to judge.
It's ridiculous how people can label others based solely on the colors they choose to wear, or in this case, hang on their rearview mirror.
Many people who have gay pride choose to display it wearing the rainbow, but "straight" people can wear the rainbow as well. It's a sign of pride and holds much meaning for the gay community, sign of diversity and strength in adversity... but truly. Wearing a certain color shouldn't be considered taboo for certain social groups (i.e. heterosexuals) just because they don't necessarily believe in what it stands for. For the gay community, it may stand for so much, whereas for the straight, it SHOULD just be a rainbow.
Wear or display any color you want. Colors aren't exclusive to a certain social group.

RE:
does a rainbow colored lei indicate a person being gay?
I was told by a coworker that a rainbow colored lei was an indication that someone is gay. My little niece got one from a church group and she put it in my car around the rearview mirror. But when I heard the gay comment I took it down so I wouldn't display the wrong message.

Well rainbow colors mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. It's a sign of hope coming out of disparity, it's a sign of diversity, and it's often used to identify gay people or groups.
So sometimes a gay person might hand such a symbol in his or her car. But somebody else might too. It could mean you like the colors, that you honor the gift of the lei, that you are GLBT, or that you are GLBT-friendly.

A Lei is an expression of gratitude, thanks, or welcome when visiting the Hawaiian islands... it can symbolize different meanings, but generally, it's a positive thing!
If you visit Hawaii, you will see thousands of brightly colored lei's being sold in shops, both real flowers and fake...in all colors of the rainbow.
I don't think a rainbow colored lei would necessarily associate a person with being gay. I lived in Hawaii for three years and had one myself hanging from my rearview for awhile (until I took it inside and hung it from a doorknob)... I'm straight. I would have never even thought of it in this aspect until now. And the gay community in HI is very active... So I'd say leave it, unless you are really worried about what others think!

yes the rainbow indicates that someone is gay. You have to make sure that it is the gay rainbow and not just the regular rainbow. Do I have you confused? The gay rainbow actually has one less color then the normal rainbow.
Regular Rainbow: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
Gay Rainbow: Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Violet
See the gay rainbow has no indigo.
Regular rainbow: 7 colors
Gay Rainbow: 6 colors
Having the regular rainbow means nothing but the gay rainbow means your gay.

What's a lei?
Wow what a hater Andrew B is! Calling people queers. Blaming the destruction of two cities on them when it is clearly not about that. What a bigot! And its not a lifestyle anymore than having red hair is a lifestyle you ******* moron! I'm sure God just loves your hatred and judging others you self righteous asshole!

What was the wrong message you did not want to send? That you are gay? If that is the case, people should not treat you any different than if you are straight or still in the closet.
It sounds like you just wanted to make sure no one thought you were gay because there is something bad about that.
Sadder still you will be passing your fear onto your niece.
