He does it on the advice from his doctor(s), as a preventative measure against infections MJ now stands to get as a result of all those plastic surgeries he just HAD to get.

Because part of his nose has fallen off. It lost blood flow because of all of those surgeries & the tip is gone.

I use to think it was to hide his ever changing nose. Now I think it is because he is gradally working his way to living in a bubble.
