I also have a turtle that does this to. But 1st make sure that ur turtle is not shedding his shell or have cracks in it or if the shell just bothers the turtle in some way. I just think that he answer is yes sometimes it does scare the turtle but not all the time. Turtles are able to and can feel when u rub or scratch it's shell. Maybe the turtle just does not like when u rub it's shell. It can be many different possibilities. U never know. Just make sure the shell is healthy and is not hurting the turtle in some way.

Think like a turtle for a minute-
What is happening when this giant thing reaches down to touch you? Is it food? A potential mate? A nice basking site or shelter?
The mostly likely thing in a turtle's brain is that you are a predator trying to kill it- birds of prey grab turtles that exact sme way.
To ease the stress the poor thing feels, approach it from lower and more head on. Stroke its head or neck gently- that is not something predators do, so it is not as stressful.
Oh- and picking up a turtle- always try to pick it up so you are holding it in the flat of your palm, You can use the other hand to help hold it in place if needed, but AVOID just picking up the shell. They like to feel something under their feet or they think back to the bird of prey bit again!

Maybe you are pressing to hard, check his shell for hair line cracks 2 as they cause pressure point's and irritate the turtle's body.

I dout he is going crazy...Most likely he is excited because you are paying attention to him. Turtles need a lot of attention more then most people give them. I have had my turtle for almost 18yrs and I try to talk to him and pet him everyday. He actually comes to his name!!!

It's because you smell. And because he remembers that day you came home drunk and tried to molest him. He's afraid your going to touch his special parts again.
