Joan Jett: in the course of her roller-coaster career, she NEVER compromised her sound and kept rocking on and proud. And if she was to right now take the stage or record in the studio, her newest material would still rock!!
Benatar went off to a good start w/ her break-out hit "Heartbreaker", but things quickly got rail-roaded, due largely in part to her affair/marriage to guitarist Neil Geraldo.
I really think Geraldo pulled Benetar's music strings--and proved pretty much the man has NO music talent in composition and/or arrangements. As a result, Benetar's music career staled, which is truly sad--for Benatar really could've showed the world more of her raw vocal power in rock music.

Pat - she has a better voice (classicly trained in opera), songs/lyrics are better. Joan Jett seemed to do a lot of covers.
