I'm not homo or anything just to let people know. I just happen to have a thing with wanting to help people, and I really don't want to spend 8+ years of my life becoming a doctor. I have my heart set on becoming a certified nursing asst. (I'm 16) and i someday hope to be an RN. What's everyone's thoughts on the issue?

I say GO FOR IT!! If that's truly your passion don't let anyone or anything stop you from achieving that goal! There is NOTHING wrong with a male nurse! I've had some and they were to some degree so much nicer and patient than the female nurses! One time I had to go to the ER with a bad case of hives from allergic reaction to antibiotics and I had a male nurse who knew sign language! He was incredible! (I'm deaf by the way lol) He helped me a lot telling me what the doctor was saying and why they were doing something. He was really awesome.
I applaud ANYONE that wants to be a nurse! That's a very demanding profession! WTG!

I'm a female nurse, and I really hope you go ahead on the courage of your convictions and enter the field. We need you -- we need more nurses of both genders, and some tasks and some roles within nursing are especially suited for men. You make a decent salary, and the job market is consistently good.

Nursing roles are also expanding, so you may be able to invent your own nursing job someday, filling a need for which there's no such job at the moment. For example, when I graduated from nursing school in 1978, it was almost unheard of for a handicapped person to be living at home/in the community on a ventilator. Now it's quite common, and I take care of such a person. Here in NY State, a nurse can become self-employed at this kind of work and make even more than doing similar work by means of being employed through an agency to do it. Who knows what cool roles and arrangements will be available by the time you get your RN! Welcome!

I had major surgery and one of the best nurses I had was male. Certainly not gay, not that I even care. There are more male nurses out there now. Of course, I would prefer a sexy babe as a nurse. In fact I married one. My wife is an RN from Asia!

But males can make good nurses, plus are stronger than women and that can be a great asset.

There are alot of situations where medical support people need to be of both genders. Floors such as those that treat the mentally ill and other situations may require nurses that are male, especially when treated men who may feel uneasy around female nurses or who may pose a threat to female nurses.

Well it sounds like you have some insecurities. The first step to helping people is leaving those at the door. Male nurses are just as good as female ones.

If you have the means, become a doctor. It will be WELL worth it. But if you don’t have the brains, willpower, and discipline for it... nurse is a good profession. Hospitals are always in need of male nurses to perform the more physically demanding duties.

I feel the same way about them as I do about female doctors: I don't really think anything of it. It's cool that you want to help people, and the medical field is going to be super hot when you get through school with all the baby boomers getting old.

Yeah, there is going to be some crazy old lady who makes fun of you for it sometime in your career, but she's an old wench whose family hates her, so go for your dreams and don't listen to old people who don't know you.

You know what? I was in the hospital for a week a few years back, and I just loved that male nurse who came in to take my temp, and check my vitals, and start to sweat and blush because I maintained eye contact with him, I do believe I tortured him without laying a hand on him

anyone that wants to devote his life to helping others is commendable .
the gender is not important
if someone is in trouble or sick .they wont care what sex the helper is .

some men might even be more comfortable with a male nurse than a female one if it comes to changing potties or being washed .
and you should do whatever you want ,don't let public opinion on answers influence you in your decision.
