The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start Your Own Car Wash by Entrepreneur Press
* Start Your Own Automobile Detailing Business by Eileen Figure Sandlin

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Good idea. I assume cash is a crunch for a biz start up?
Buy a used but clean pickup truck. Buy the proper pressue washing equipment and supplies. Surf the net to find what you need. Put professional and legible signs on the truck.
Call on commercial businesses, moving companies, garbage trucks, emergency medical, whoever. Pass out fliers. You will probably get some business pretty quickly. But the key will be to get some good commercial accounts where you can do multiple vehicles at the same time, you will bill more, have reliable business and you will use less gass driving around.
Make sure you incorprate your business in your state and get the proper business licenses and insurance before you do a days work.

OK, assuming you know what equipment you need and you get some reliable advice on insurance, the most important thing will be marketing. You need to figure out what your marketing message is going to be and then put yourself in situations where you'll meet potential customers.

Are you going to promote your service as the lowest price? (BAD IDEA!) Or are you going to market your convenience, the quality of your work, or what? You might talk to all of these things on some level, but pick a siimple, easy message and make that your hallmark. I would guess that the "I come to you" message of convenience is important. You have to be REALLY good at the detail work to distinguish yourself in that area. Maybe you are, in which case you can promote that somehow.

No doubt that commercial accounts -- companies with small fleets of vehicles -- are going to be your best customers. However, it may be tough to convince a business owner your work is good and you are reliable without other referrals.

So I would start by looking for personal referrals. Let your family and friends know what you're doing and ask them to spread the word. Or, more specifically, after you've generally asked for their help, follow up and ask for a specific referral. Ask, for example if there's one person, among their friends and associates, that they think would be interested in your service. See if they'll pick up the phone and call that person on your behalf. Most of your friends will probably be delighted to help you -- but you will have to help them target their efforts and give them specific guidance.

Once you have a few happy clients, you can ask for testimonials, which you can include in a simple brochure. THAT little thing will make it easier to go after business accounts. And a standing order to wash a catering companies' six trucks every week will be so much more valuable than the one little old lady whose Buick you wash once a month. So make sure you grow in the right direction.

Good luck!

First you need to check with the the city that you live in if they will approve you business or not. Each state and cities are different. Check before investing any money in to your business.
