Simply put:
The volume of gold is divided into 24 parts. 24 karat gold is 24 parts of 24 pure gold.
18 k is 18 parts pure gold and six parts some other metal like silver, copper, or nickel.
14 k is 14 of 24 parts pure gold, etc...
Remember that a troy ounce is 31.1 grams (1/12 pound) instead of avoirdupois ounce which is 28.3 grams (1/16 pound). All precious metals are weighed in this way.
Grams are the preferred unit of weight measurement for small amounts of gold, Grains (480 in a troy ounce) for miniscule amounts, and troy ounces (t.oz) for larger amounts.
On pieces which are marked as plated (gp, gf, or rgp for example) this formula only accounts for the amount of gold on the thin plating and not the entire piece.
By these formulas, the piece is roughly 60% pure or about 18 grams gold

14k gold is 14/24 gold or 14 parts gold and 8 parts other metals by weight.
Thus 1oz. of 14k gold contains 0.583 oz pure gold. Although, be careful. Gold and other metals are measured in troy ounces (one eighteenth of a pound) and not standard ounces (one sixteenth of a pound.

100% purity gold=24 k
1k=100/24=4.166%
14k=4.166x14=58.33gms of 24k gold in 100g of 14k gold
for 1gm of 14k=58.33/100=.5833
1 oz=31.1gm
therefore 1 oz of 14k gold contains 31.1x.5833=18.14gm of 24k gold
