Make sure you plugged it to the right hole. Then go to volume control (start>all programs>accesories>entertainment>volume control) and rise the controls.. i assume you have windows xp.
okay good luck! Restarting your Pc helps also as it refrehes the system when doing so.

The wire could've broken, inside the plastic insulation. That's what my speakers did when the wire broke. If I kicked it around a while, the wire eventually would get into the right position to make contact, and the speakers would work. If they're expensive speakers, Radio Shack or somebody may be able to help you out with a replacement wire, or information on mending. If they're not, maybe buy new ones.

But, also, they could possibly be plugged into the wrong jack. Even if you've checked a dozen times, try again. Be sure the power cord is plugged in if they need power. Double-check your sound settings on your computer. And maybe, if you can, try the speakers on another computer. I think there's a couple other things that can cause this besides what I thought of, too, but I'm not real sure what... it's been a while since I broke my wire.

First, check to make sure you plugged them in all the way. Next, check if you plugged them into the right hole. If these two do not work, then usually either the speakers themselves are malfunctioning or there is a rip in the cable.

Make sure they are in the right port. Sounds like they may be in the Mic or Line in port.
