A human baby takes nine months to mature in the womb during this period the mother has to be taken care of.At least for another five years the baby has to be taken care of, and taught the rudiments of living in this world before it can even venture into the world. And another fifteen years before it can stand on its feet. Will anybody else take care of your baby for twenty long years and make him into a responsible part of the society? Will you take care of another persons' baby for twenty years and make him into a responsible part of the society? Can you suggest the guidelines for an institution which will replace this institution that you are proposing to be dismantled ? Without the seemingly clumsy institution we will see a reversion to cave man in a couple of centuries. NO

While this question has been asked for hundreds of years and the answer lies strictly in the Sociology of minds.

Man (meaning woman too) is a social mammal. Man needs to have contact and some type of regiment of security. Man develops the social structure of the human being. Communities and economy success are do, because of the social structure of the Family. Man and Woman is the basis for how humanity survives. Marriage denotes a anchor of the family. It also anchors the of communal living, love, teaching and responsibility.

If this institution would be dismantled then humans would be lost socially, the anchor of society would be lost. The intimacy of the family would be lost and the destruction of humanity could occur.

If you don't want to get married that is your individual choice but the foundation of humanity is anchored on the societies family structure and economic strong hold. As a whole it is, that is marriage is what holds the social foundation and humanity together.

Therefore NO to the dismantling of this institution.

I personally think it should be dismantled.

First off, I think it is immoral for the government to give incentives for people to marry or are married. This is direct discrimination to those that cannot marry or do not wish to. There is no reason why a person should get a tax break because he has a paper saying they are tied down legally to another person. If two people wish to come together, they can do so freely, and they can get a ceremony (religious or secular) if they wish to.

Seeing as to how marriage has become an economic issue, it will never be dismantled. Even divorce is a great source of revenue for attorneys, which happen to be the group of people that make laws.

Bible as an excuse to keep marriage is ridiculous. We have separation of the church and state, believe it or not.

Hey... I love my marriage.
It does take sacrifice on both parts to make it work and few people understand that or want to practice it anymore. But when two people (a man and a woman) understand it it is the most wonderful gift of God.
Our culture/society has messed it up and it has been so compromised.
We have been slowly desensitized to the value of marriage because first it was ok to live together without being married, and now all the push for same sex couples.
Marriage is to be respected and revered because it is the foundation of any culture, because it is the foundation of the family.
Marriage when committed to with unconditional love, acceptance and sacrifice is what every heart wants and longs for - a loving life partner. It does not get any better.

Marriage is really an institution which has been here for millenniums. It's an important part of our culture and many people see marriage as perfectly natural part of their life.

Manny people aren't so pragmatic and see it as an evidence of their love. They also feel more secure in marriage.

It would be also a great legal problem - what would happen with present marriages?

And after all, anyone can anyone choose whether to marry.

Shall not be dismantled. The institution had been a healthy one for the society and the individual and has stood the test of time.
If at all anything is to be touched, it is gay marriages and this will help bring healthy social conditions for the future.

See, we all are governed by the laws of nature.
We all need to unite with the opposite sex to keep the race moving. All living creatures do it in some or the other form. Yes, of course! it can be done without marrying.

A lion kills his offspring, it's the female one who saves it. Why is the survival rate of offsprings in case of animals so less?

We humans don't want this, and let it happen by setting some norms... we help each other, live in a society which no other animals do to this extent..
So, Humans, the best race!

Thus, it's a rule we have developed for ourselves... marriage.. to start a life, give birth to child, rear it up and move the race, with defined responsibilities of both the parents. It requires to have a bond between the 2 uniting to be with eachother in good/bad times and never leave the other.

Another analogy... IDENTITY. What's your identity, who were your fore fathers, what race do you belong to??? We can track these by just our last names...

YES, it's necessary.

I personally think marriage is a beautiful thing, for people who choose to do it. My uncle married his girlfriend of twenty five years last week, I never thought that would happen! I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with government problems though. Married couples get more rights than common law couples do. If anything happened to my uncle, it is harder for my aunt to deal with that if they are unmarried.

I don't see why we should dismantle it, but I don't think we should discriminate against those who choose not to do it. It isn't fair that those are are not married get less rights than we do.

Marriage is the demand of discipline.to put social animal in some kind of straight jacket? So its THE NORMAL.if there happens to be a deviation the pressure is on the deviating parties that they are going away from NORMAL. marriage is not necessary at all if the commitment is there . marriage is useless if ther is no commitment.
