I think I found more value in the film then most critics. The reason it never found a large audience was because it was to creepy for the younger crowd, but to mild for adults. Still, I enjoyed the film's carnival flavor, and the nostalgic father and son dynamic. The score, and the time and place, are also well drawn. My favorite scene is when the boys are hiding in the library, and there father (played by Jason Robards) confronts Mr. Dark. The scene where Mr. Dark leads his carnival down the streets of the town, while the boys are hiding underneath his feet in the storm drain is also memorable. The film has it's share of flaws (not the least of which is that the boys who play the two leads are extremely dull), but it also has a half dozen memorable scenes that really leave a lasting impression in your mind. It's a fun film to watch around Halloween time in the autumn.

Ach! Yes! My friend Wendy and I used to rent it every time we had a sleep-over. We'd drink hot apple cider until our bladders were fit to burst, do gymnastics on her downstairs murphy beds, and watch that movie. It rocked. Rocked, I tell you.
... Damn, I miss her.
